Marauders Vs Queens (Leeds) 22nd/September/2007

Miss-firing Marauders are swept aside by Hunslet Old Boys the reigning Premier division champions.

Moorends-Thorne Marauders found themselves 10 nil down within the first 10 minutes of their opening Premier division game of the 2007/08 season, it took the Marauders until the 15 minute to record their first points of the season when Chris Allen swooped on a loose ball that had been dislodged after Gaz Munro and Brett Staveley made a ferocious two man tackle, Allen was stopped 10 metres short of the try line, from the play the ball Dean Armstrong hit Dean Wright sending him crashing over for a debut try, Wayne Rafferty added the extra points from the conversion 6 - 10.

The game was moving along at a fast pace with little between the two sides, the chink in the armour was found by the visitors when on 26 minutes Gaz Munro was sin binned for a sloppy high tackle, Hunslet made the extra man tell immediately and used the extra man to go over for a converted try from the resulting penalty 6 - 16.

Moorends where hitting back and taking the game to the Old Boys through their forwards, again a lapse of concentration brought up the error that extended the Old Boys lead, a dropped ball on the halfway line was plucked up and the counter attack saw the visiting loose-forward crashing in under the posts for a converted try 6 - 22

Poor tackling allowed the Old Boys in just before half-time for a unconverted the leave the Marauders with a second-half hill to climb. 6-26

Half-time Moorends-Thorne Marauder 6 - 26 Hunslet Old Boys

Hunslet extended their lead on 43 minutes from a penalty after the home side had been caught offside 6 - 28, Moorends where starting to look sharper going forward in the second half after Chris Allen had been moved from hooker to play in is normal role at Loose forward, this also gave Mark Roach more room to weave his own brand of magic, but again the Marauders shot themselves in the foot with another dropped ball that resulted in the visitors exploiting the constant lapses in concentration to record a further 6 points with a converted try, 6 - 34.

The Chris Allen and Mark Roach combination started to gain momentum and the Marauders hit back on 50 minutes when Mark Roach dummied himself over under the sticks, Wayne Rafferty adding his second conversion 12 - 34.

Moorends where starting to look more like a premier division side as the game went on and Chris Allen was the next name onto the score board when he darted 40 metres handing off 3 players to go in at the corner for a unconverted try, 16 - 34.

Hunslet hit back straight away with a long range try in the corner after weak tackling near the Hunslet try line 16 - 38

Three minutes later Chris Allen again showed his class as he dummied himself over for his second try, this time Chris Pearson added the conversion 22 - 38.

The Marauders where in a optimistic mood going into the last ten minutes but it was just not going to be their day as unforced errors continued to blight them, the Old Boys had the last say scoring a converted try from a harmless grubber kick which was fumbled by the Marauders in their own in goal area which was pounced on by the visitors for a converted try 22 - 44

Moorends-Thorne Marauders 22 - 44 Hunslet Old Boys

To many unforced errors and lapses in concentration let the Marauders down, a combination of both resulted in at lease 26 of the Old Boys points, we also looked a little to slow in our forwards who played more as individuals and rarely built a good attacking platform for the half backs to work from.

Marauders Vs Pontefract Social Club 27/10/2007

Moorends-Thorne Marauders still find themselves searching for their first win of the season after putting in a much improved performance against Queens (Leeds) the current Premier division play off champions.

After the initial 10 minute arm wrestle it was Queens who opened the scoring when a cruel but innocent looking grubber kick was fumbled by the Marauders 5 metres from their goal line, Arron Henry was the first to the spilled ball to take full advantage diving over under the posts, Jonathon Milner added the extra points for the Leeds based outfit, 0 - 6

Both teams where playing open expansive flowing rugby league football but with both defences holding firm it looked like it would take a special play to open the door to the try line, this was done by Jonathon Milner who from a scrum 30 metres out put in an excellent kick that Arron Henry re-gathered to again go in under the posts, Milner added the extra points, 0 - 12.

Moorends were not to be out done and after Wayne Rafferty and Gaz Munro had set up field position the marauders moved the ball wide to the right before Mark Roach threaded a beautiful grubber into the Queens goal area and Brendan Neal won the race to ground the ball for the Marauders first score, 4 - 12.

The Marauders where just about winning the territorial battle at this stage of the game, this eventually brought the result that the home side wanted, excellent passing from Shaun Carver, Chris Allen and Mark Roach sent Dave Knott Crashing in at the corner. 8 - 12.

Half-Time Moorends-Thorne Marauders 8 - 12 Queens (Leeds)

Queens were the first out of the blocks stunning the Marauders with a quick second half try straight from the re-start, the Marauders knocked on the kick-off and from the resulting scrum right winger Jonathon Winter was put over with a long ball from Ryan Robinson, Milner again added the extra points, 8 - 18.

Dave Knott was denied a try by the referee after racing 20 metres before crashing over under the posts with two defenders around him, the referee said the defenders had held him up,

The visitors stretched their lead further on 60 minutes when the Marauders were penalised for having a raised elbow, a quick tap penalty was allowed and Chris Munden went over in the corner 8 - 22.

The decision by the referee to allow the try seemed to push the Marauders into another gear and with Chris Allen and Mark Roach weaving their magic and Gaz Munro leading from the front the Marauders started their fight back, Steve Allen, Gaz Munro & Kev Lake dragged the Queens defence to the right with powerful running before a quick ball from Dean Armstrong to Chris Allen saw the Marauders stand-off show a dummy and dance in under the posts, Chris Pearson added the extra two points, 14 - 22.

The bruising clash saw both teams having walking wounded on the park and it was one of the Marauders who found the try line next, Mark Roach crashed onto a cheeky pass from Chris Allen more like a prop forward than a scrum half to skittle two defenders in front of him and carry a further two defenders with him ads he scored, 18 - 22.

Marauders open up their Yorkshire account

Moorends-Thorne Marauders went back to the bread and butter stuff to open their Yorkshire Premier division account with a derby win against Brotherton A.R.L.F.C.

After the early arm wrestle the Marauders opened the scoring with Matty Bingley racing the remaining 40 metres to go in under the posts after Ryan Rafferty and Mark Roach combined to send Steve Allen crashing through the visitors defence before he sent Bingley on his way, Ryan Rafferty adding the extra points, 6 - 0.

Chris Allen?s vision and Skill on 18 minutes broke the Brotherton?s defence next, he cleverly used the blindside to breach the defensive line before drawing the fullback to feed Dean Armstrong with a perfect pass to send the hooker under the posts, Ryan Rafferty converting, 12 - 0.

The loss of Matty Bingley on 25 minutes with a broken arm added to the Marauders already
large injury problem and with the game held up for 20 minutes due to the injury, the Marauders coaching staff had the time to go over the match situation pointing out the main points of the game that needed more attention and also how pleased they were with many other aspects of the game.

Moorends opened up the restart back on top form, excellent work by Cliffton Richardson and Gaz Munro took the Marauders to the halfway line, Dean Armstrong jumped from acting half and Jason Blanchard crashed through the Brotherton defence making an extra 15 metres, Mark Roach linked with Chris Allen to send Steve Allen crashing through to race 20 metres to record his first try of the season, Ryan Rafferty extended the Marauders lead with the conversion, 18 - 0

With the Marauders controlling the game Shaun Carver popped up showing his versatility at prop forward to crash over off of a short ball from Ryan Rafferty, Rafferty again converted the touch line conversion, 24 - 0.

Half-Time :Moorends-Thorne Marauders 24 - 0 Brotherton

Because of the injury to Matty Bingley the referee said the second-half would only be 25 minutes long and it was the Marauders who came out with the guns blazing, big hits in defence by Kev and Trev Lake forced the visitors onto the back foot and with Wayne Rafferty, Gaz Munro and Ben Hoffman taking the Marauders forward with the hard yards, the Marauders looked well on course for their first win of the season after Chris Allen ghosted through the Brotherton defence and again drew the full-back before sending Dave Knott the remaining 30 metres into the corner for a unconverted try, 28 - 0

Slack defence by the Marauder allowed Brotherton to conjure a try from out of the blue, with Bolton looking well tackled by the Marauders disaster struck when the third Marauder to join in the tackle knocked the other two tacklers off leaving Bolton with an easy walk over in the corner, 28 - 4

With just 2 minutes left Shane Lake fed Simon Guest who broke the defensive line down the right wing to take the Marauders within 10 metres of the try line, a quick play the ball had Shaun Carver crashing in at the corner for his second try, 32 - 4.

Cliff Key said after the last couple of weeks of indifferent feelings the lads have knuckled down this week and produced a stunning performance that we knew was in them, we will be working to bring everyone?s fitness levels up and then I can not see why we will not be challenging for a top four spot at the end of the season.

Knottingley Rockware Vs Marauders 5th/January/2008
Moorends-Thorne Marauders fell foul of one of the most inept refereeing displays ever seen at the Thorne Miners Welfare Ground.

Club secretary Jim Welbourn was left spitting feathers after the Marauders went down 26 - 30 to Pontefract Social Club, he said the referee could not keep up with play and was left in back play far to often which cost us on more than one occasion, he also had to spent far to much time in the play the ball area because he was not capable to get back the ten metres necessary.

The Marauders set off like an house on fire and quickly opened the scoring on 7 minutes, Ryan Rafferty launched a high bomb into the left hand corner, Neil Speight was the first to react to the fumble and from two hard drives by Gaz Munro and Jason Blanchard Ryan Rafferty sent Chris Allen crashing over with three men on his back, Ryan Rafferty adding the extras 6 - 0.

Moorends defended stoutly playing into the strong wind which the West Yorkshire visitors used to great effect to pin the Marauders back for long periods, after being caught flat footed Gilbert dummied himself over under the post for the visitors, Williams added the extras to even the score, 6 - 6.

Ten minutes later Pontefract nosed themselves into the lead when again the hooker went from acting half again crashing over for a second try again converted by Williams, 6 - 12.

Moorends thought they had equalised when Wayne Rafferty crashed through the defence 15 metres from the touchline, with the line begging he went round the back of the defence and grounded the ball at the back of the goals, to every ones amazement (even the Pontefract team) the referee disallowed the try.

Pontefract then went further ahead when both teams were down to 12 men having had one man each sent to the sin bin, quick hands to the Marauders right caught the home side short as the Pontefract left winger left the Marauders defence wanting, Williams again added the extra points, 6 - 18.

Half-Time Moorends-Thorne Marauder 6 - 18 Pontefract Social Club

The Marauder stepped up the pace and quickly had Pontefract on the back foot, Jason Blanchard played the ball quickly and Ryan Rafferty scooted from the acting half back making 60 metres, Mark Roach found Chris Allen who sent Shaun Carver over for an unconverted try, 10 - 18.

Five minutes later Ryan Rafferty broke the visitors defence again making 30 metres, with Pontefract struggling to get back on side Gaz Munro took full advantage and made a further 20 metres, from the play the ball Mark Roach found Chris Allen who sent his brother Steve on a rampaging run sucking in defenders before sending Cliffton Richardson on his way to the try line for a unconverted try, 14 - 18.

The Marauder had a second try disallowed when Dave Knott popped the ball up through the back door for Ryan Rafferty to go over taking two defenders with him, the referee then ruled the ball had not been grounded,

With the Marauders still well on top it came as a shock when Pontefract gave themselves breathing space by going over for a converted try against the run of play 14 - 24

Cliffton Richardson crashed over again after excellent forward play by Gaz Munro, Shane Lake and Kev Lake had set up the attacking position for Chris Allen and Ryan Rafferty to combine to send Richardson over, Ryan Rafferty converted 20 - 24.

With 25 minutes remaining and Moorends in the driving seat it looked like the home side could score at any time, Cliffton Richardson was denied his hat trick after Trev Lake sent Steve Allen on a long run, a quick play the ball before Pontefract could get back on side saw Mark Roach hit Richardson with a long ball, whilst in the act of going over the try line Richardson was tackled by an off side player but again with the referee not being able to keep up with play the offence went unpunished, 3 minutes later Richardson was again denied his hat trick from what could have been an action replay.

Pontefract took full advantage of the Marauders frustration to again score a converted try from acting half-back 20 - 30

The Marauders kept pressing and pulled a converted try back after Dave Knott crashed onto a short ball scattering the visiting defence and Ryan Rafferty added the extra points 26 - 30?

Upton Vs Marauders 2/2/2008
No brotherly love from the Marauders

Moorends-Thorne Marauders sweep aside Brotherton A.R.L.F.C. 48 - nil in the bottom of the table clash, going into the game on the back of a referee assisted defeat the Marauders knew they had to come away from this clash with the two points on offer to re-start their season.

Moorends posted their intentions as early as the 4th minute, Gaz Munro and Jason Blanchard built an attacking platform for Ryan Rafferty to move the ball wide finding Chris Allen who?s clever short ball sent Shaun Carver crashing for a unconverted try, 0 - 4.

6 Minutes later the Marauders improved their lead, moving the ball to the right through Mark Roach, Chris Allen & Gaz Munro, Munro drew the defence before sending Steve Allen crashing over the top of Steve Ramsey to race 40 metres for a try converted by Ryan Rafferty, 0 - 10.

A good defensive stint by Brotherton pinned Moorends well inside their own half but the decision to run the ball on the last tackle brought dividends; Chris Allen, Mark Roach, Gaz Munro shipped the ball through quick hands to send Cliffton Richardson on a long run to open his account in the corner, 0 - 14

Shaun Carver doubled his account on 30 minutes when he latched onto a set piece ball to crash over next to the posts giving Ryan Rafferty an easy conversion, 0 - 20

With the Moorends pack being Prominent up front, it was allowing Ryan Rafferty and Dean Armstrong the room to work from the acting half position, after good driving by Ben Hoffman Ryan Rafferty darted from half back catching the home defence on the back foot to go in under the posts for a try he converted himself, 0 - 26

Chris Allen added the extra spark for the next try, he dummied himself through the home defence before sending Shaun Carver the last 10 metres under the posts, Ryan Rafferty added the conversion, 0 - 32

Half-Time Brotherton 0 - 32 Moorends-Thorne Marauders

Moorends went straight back on the offensive attacking the fringes of the Brotherton defence, Shane Lake came off the bench to add his experience to the pack, Dave Knott put in a tremendous tackle that dislodged the ball and with Adam Pickles reacting quickly to scoop up the ball and race the 95 metres to score in the corner, 0 - 36

Chris Pearson, Kev & Trev Lake built the platform for the next Marauders try, Dean Armstrong
Spread the ball wide using Mark Roach Gaz Munro and Steve Allen to send Cliffton Richardson away to the try line, Ryan Rafferty converted 0 - 42.

The Marauders last try had some really good touches from several players before Shaun Carver turned the ball back inside for Chris Allen to crash in under the posts, Ryan Rafferty again added the extra points 0 - 48.

With Moorends well on top the referee made the decision to blow up and end the game 10 minutes early.

The Marauders coaching staff of Ernie Lake & Cliff Key said it was pleasing to nil Brotherton we have been working hard on it all week, scoring tries has never been a problem for us, it?s our defence that has let us down over the last couple of seasons seeing us letting in sloppy tries, next week will be a complete different ball game when we entertain Myton Warriors on the Moorends Recreation ground.

It came down to the referees second-half 50/50?s calls to sort out the difference between two excellent evenly matched rugby league sides, both teams put on a show of attacking football with steel being in abundance in defence.

Moorends took the game by the scruff of its neck and with the wind advantage dominated the first 20 minutes of the first half despite going down to a Myton Warriors try on 8 minutes, Moorends had looked comfortable defending their line before lady luck smiled on the visitors when a harmless looking grubber was threaded into the in goal area, this was cruelly deflected away from the Moorends defenders and into the path of Lee Walton who grounded the ball for the games opening try converted by Ashley James, 0 - 6.

The Marauders where denied twice, when on both occasions Cliffton Richardson was brought back with the final passes being deemed as being forward, lady luck this time failed the Marauders, Kev Lake, Dave Knott & Ryan Rafferty combined to send Ben Hoffman close, Dean Armstrong scampered from acting half-back to crash over taking three defenders with him, unfortunately he spilled the ball on grounding the ball.

With the game flowing from end to end the Marauders where just holding the territorial advantage over the Warriors, Jason Blanchard and Ben Hoffman built the platform with good driving runs, from a quick play the ball on 26 minutes, Ryan Rafferty found Chris Allen with the ball, performing a run-a-round with Chris Allen who showed the ball and dance the last 20 metres to go over behind the posts, Ryan Rafferty added the extra points, 6 - 6.

Ryan Rafferty took control of the game threading grubbers into the in goal area and bombing the Myton wingers before edging the Marauders in front on 37 minutes with a well taken drop goal,
7 - 6.

From the kick-off the referee judge that the Marauders had knocked on when the player clearly lost the ball facing his own goal, from the resulting scrum after the Marauders had protested the knock on, Myton Warriors where awarded a penalty for off side in front of the goals, Ashley James gleefully slotted over the penalty to give the visitors a half-time lead, 7 - 8.

Half-Time Moorends-Thorne Marauders 7 - 8 Myton Warriors

Myton opened the second-half with the wind on their backs and using it to their good by pinning the Marauders deep inside their own half to keep them on the back foot, the Marauders had to dig deep in defence and after the Warriors replacement scattered three defenders ten metres out he must have thought he was going to steam roll full-back Dave Knott on his way to the line ! Dave Knott brutally crashed tackled the big Warrior head on to dislodge the ball, drive him backwards and into the ground leaving him on the floor concussed, this tackle gave inspiration to the rest of the Marauders who where getting heavily penalised by the referee.

The bad decisions by the referee where not just against the Marauders as the Warriors also had a few against them, including being brought back for a forward pass that look a completely good pass, Myton managed to extend their lead on 58 minutes when Ashley James added a second penalty from his fourth attempt, 7 - 10.

Ten minutes later the Marauders thought they had again been badly done by when Chris Allen threaded a grubber kick towards the goal line, the Myton defender played for the ball with his feet which he re-directed into the arms of Brett Staveley, the Myton defender managed to regroup himself to make a try saving tackle, Staveley played the ball quickly and with Shaun Carver going over the referee brought play back indicating that the Myton player had not played at the ball and it was a turn over in play.

Myton Had the last say in the game on 70 minutes when Ashley James shrugged off two tacklers to go the last 20 metres under the posts for a try he converted himself, 7 - 16.

Full-Time Moorends-Thorne Marauders 7 - 16 Myton Warriors

Marauders coach Cliff Key said we will bounce back and this result has not broken our spirits, we had to dig deep in the second half on the back of a huge penalty count against us, its very rare that we gets penalised for being off side so to have 10 just in the second half is just comical, the only debacle out their was the guy with the whistle, I?m more than sure if we had been presented with as much ball as the Warriors we would have come away with the two points.

Moorends-Thorne Marauders went away with a depleted side to Pontefract Social Club, the West Yorkshire side had beat the Marauders a couple of weeks earlier at the recreation ground Moorends.

Moorends started the game in a determined fashion pinning the home side deep into their own half, this was the pattern for the first five minutes of the game with Cliffton Richardson and Dave Knott both going close, the deadlock was broken by the home side when they where having difficulties reaching the halfway line, a neat little chip over the Marauders on rushing defence was re-gathered by the kicker would carried the ball inside the Marauders half of the field, drawing Dave Knott before feeding a supporting player to go in for the first try, 4 - 0

The wheels fell completely off the Marauders wagon and in the next ten minutes Pontefract extended their lead to 26 - 0 with a further four tries and three conversions.

Looking down the barrels of a heavy defeat the patched up Marauders started a mini fight back, with the forwards stabilizing the ship it was fitting that the hard working Gaz Munro crashed over taking two defenders with him for a try converted by Ryan Rafferty, 26 - 6.

The introduction of veteran prop Ernie Lake helped to sure up the middle of of the Moorends defence, this also gave the youngsters confidence going forward, quick hands to the right brought reward for the marauders with Jason Blanchard going over in the right hand corner for a unconverted try, 26 - 10.

Ryan Rafferty guiding his pack around the park had Shane Lake, Wayne Rafferty and Kev Lake setting the position for Mark Roach to send Ernie Lake crashing in under the posts for a try converted by Ryan Rafferty, 26 - 16.

Half-Time Pontefract 26 - 16 Moorends-Thorne Marauders

Moorends where slow out of the blocks at the start of the second-half and fell further behind to two quick converted tries, 38 - 16. Moorends re-grouped themselves and again started to dominate the forward battle that again saw them gaining territorial, Wayne Rafferty scattered the Pontefract defence to go over for a try converted by Ryan Rafferty, 38 - 22.

Moorends where again hit by to sucker tries to go 44 - 22 behind before Ryan Rafferty pulled a try back when he dummied and stepped himself over in the last five minutes, 44 - 26.

Richard Whitehouse extended the Warriors lead on 10 minutes with another penalty for a late tackle, 0 - 8.

Moorends came together after Dave Knott made a tremendous hit on Richard Whitehouse causing him to spill the ball, from the resulting scrum Moorends made in roads into the Warriors half, Ryan Rafferty and Mark Roach combined to send Roger McClean clear, great support play by Chris Allen saw him crash over for a try converted by Ryan Rafferty, 6 - 8.

Half-Time Moorends Marauders 14 - 8 Hunslet Warriors
