Sheffield Forgers (8 - 54) Won 10/5/2008
  Forgers 8 - 54 Marauders

The Marauders opened their Rugby League Conference season travelling away across South Yorkshire to the Sheffield Forgers.

In blazing sunshine Wayne Green opened the season on the 6th minute after latching onto a short ball from club skipper Mark Roach - Ryan Rafferty converted, 0 - 6.

Playing behind an aggressive pack Ryan Rafferty and Tom Brandham got the chance to illustrate their arsenal of tricks - Brandham hit Gaz Munro with a great ball, his angled run saw him breaching the defence before finding Brendan Neil who went over opening his try account for the season - Ryan Rafferty converted, 0 - 12.

Excellent team play by Gaz Everton, Alex Palmer and Adam Lloyd brought the Marauders into an excellent attacking position, this gave Tom Brandham the opportunity to use his quick footwork to ghost over on 20 minutes for his first Marauders try - Ryan Rafferty again converted. 0 - 18.

The Marauders were then stunned when the referee stopped their forward momentum when he ordered a water break.

The introduction of Shaun Carver by Head-coach Pete Green soon paid dividends, Jason Blanchard and Roger McClean combined to send Carver on a trade mark bullocking run before off loading to the supporting Ryan Rafferty who danced himself over for a try he converted, 24 - 0.

The game then became a casualty of some adverse refereeing that resulted in the Marauders loosing their go forward and composure until the half-time break.

Half-Time Sheffield Forgers 0 - 24 Moorends-Thorne Marauders

Pete Green used the break and his knowledge to change a few things during the break, from the kick-off Ryan Rafferty gave the ball to Shaun Carver who again drove the ball in hard and fast before off loading to the supporting Wayne Green who raced 50 metres to the try line, Ryan Rafferty slotted over the conversion, 0 - 30.

Wayne Green delivered the killer punch from the kick-off - he collected the ball and destroyed the Forgers defence going the full length of the field to add his third try of the game, Ryan Rafferty added his sixth conversion of the game, 0 - 36.

Mark Roach and Ryan Rafferty combined to send Ben Hoffman deep into the Forgers half, a quick play the ball saw Gavin Lawton just being stopped short - Jason Blanchards late feet saw him crash over, Ryan Rafferty added the extra points, 0 - 42.

Slack marking saw the Forgers hooker barge himself over to add the Sheffield sides first conference points, 4 - 42.

The Marauders got themselves back on track when Ben Hoffman sliced through the home defence off a good ball from Danny Hornsby, again Rafferty proved to be the marksman, 4 - 48.

The referee introduced his second water break on sixty minutes - it was the Forgers that reacted first after the restart, quickly moving the ball wide saw their right centre go over in the corner, 8 - 48.

The game suffered during the last twenty minutes with strange decisions coming from the merry whistler who seemed intent on keeping the score down and at his pace, the Marauders had the last say when Dean Armstrong, Wayne Rafferty and Craig Hookway united to send Wayne Green in for his fourth try of the game which was converted by Ryan Rafferty’

Full-Time Sheffield Forgers 8 - 54 Moorends-Thorne Marauders

That was a pleasing hit out and should send out a warning of our intentions to be one of the front runners in the South Yorkshire and Lincolnshire division, we scored nine tries and also had four disallowed because the referee could not keep up with play, I was also pleased with Ryan Rafferty’s kicking.

Lincoln City Knights (28 - 22) Won 17/5/2008
  Marauders 28 - 22 Knights

A brace from Dean Armstrong proved decisive as Lincoln City Knights were defeated 28-22 at Moorends-Thorne Marauders

Armstrong’s brace gave the hosts a 12-6 lead by halftime, with debutant hooker Jim Bardgett responding for the Knights.

Craig Hookway, Mark Roach, and Shaun Carver crossed for the Marauders, with tries from Dan Reeds, Matt Meanwell and Meehal Grint not enough to prevent defeat for the Lincoln.

The Marauders took the lead within two minutes of the kick off thanks to a Ryan Rafferty penalty awarded for a high tackle.2 - 0

Lincoln soon mounted pressure on the Marauders who had Gaz Everton, Jason Blanchard and Ben Hoffmann standing tall in a well drilled Marauders defence, even with the visitors dominating the territorial battle for the first 20 minutes the Marauders looked the slickest with ball in hand and the most likely to score.

The breakthrough came on 26 minutes when Ryan Rafferty and Mark Roach linked to send Brendan Neal away, Neal found Dean Armstrong out of the supporting Marauders to send him over in the corner for a unconverted try, 6 - 0

The Knights soon levelled the scores when Bardgett fed an excellent dummy before running in for a try, which Mark Pearson converted. 6 - 6

But Moorends-Thorne Marauders regained the lead just before the break after the introduction of their new signing Chris Allen, Gareth Munro and Wayne Rafferty had sucked in the Knights defence - quick hands to the right by Adam Lloyd and Mark Roach left Chris Allen drawing the Knights defensive cover before sending Armstrong ghosting over for his second try, converted by Ryan Rafferty, 12 - 6

Half-Time Moorends-Thorne Marauders 12 Vs 6 Lincoln City Knights

The hosts extended their lead within a minute of the restart when Roach broke away from inside his own half before offloading to Hookway to run in for a try, which Rafferty converted. 18 - 6

Lincoln responded almost immediately, only for Mitchell and Bardgett to both be held up over the line. Minutes later Dan Reeds was tackled just two metres out as the Knights continued to try and get back into the game.

The Marauders extended their lead when Chris Allen took advantage of an awkward bounce to unloaded to the supporting Ryan Rafferty, Rafferty turned the ball back inside to Mark Roach before running in for a try, which Ryan Rafferty converted, 24 - 6.

The Knights soon hit back after forcing the Marauders to drop out straight from the kick-off, prop Craig King made an excellent break with his ball return, powering through a tackle, before offloading to Dan Reeds to run in for a try, which Pearson converted, 24 - 12

Shaun Carver went over for the final Marauders try after Wayne Green had caused mayhem with his strong running to give the hosts a 16 point advantage 28 - 12.

Lincoln controlled the next 5 minutes of the game with Dale Jinks releasing Meanwell to run in for a try on 77 minutes .28 - 16

Minutes later Andy Donnor managed to offload in the tackle leaving Grint to sprint 70 metres clear for a try, which Pearson converted, but it was a little too late. 28 - 22

Assistant Coach Mark Roach said “Lincoln had 55% of the territory but we dominated the play, with ball in hand we looked dangerous and our defence was solid, on the negative side we gave away far too many cheap penalties that helped to contribute towards their domination of the territory, our break outs were fast and this resulted in us having 3 tries disallowed when the referee made decisions 30 to 40 metres from play.

Rossington Sharks (Won) 8 - 43
  Rossington Sharks 8 - 43 Marauders

Moorends-Thorne Marauders had to many keys to the Sharks defensive doors in the Rugby League Conference Lincolnshire and South Yorkshire league derby, The Sharks made their visitors work hard for every point during the first forty minutes, complacency and forcing the ball during the second forty saw the Marauders completion rate drop dramatically.

Moorends dominated the early exchanges with Dean Armstrong and Ryan Rafferty playing behind a pack full of strong runners, Rossington dug deep with repel the Marauders with big hits coming in from Tom Lyons and Barry Richardson.

Mark Roach opened the Rossington defence on 6 minutes when he jumped from a quick play the ball to give Alex Palmer a beautiful short ball before crashing over in the corner, 0 - 4.

Neil Storey pulled a penalty goal back four minutes later when Brendan Neal was charged with stealing the ball, 2 - 4.

Chris Allen was at the heart of every thing as the Marauders started to make their angled running count, breaking a three man tackle on 14 minutes the strong running loose-forward sent his supporting scrum-half Ryan Rafferty in under the posts for a try he converted himself, 2 - 10.

Chris Allen again broke the Sharks defensive line on 21 minutes, this time it was Mark Roach who benefited from his gild edge passing to step Mick Quinn before going over next to the posts, Ryan Rafferty Converted, 2 - 16.

Rossington were rewarded for a short period of dominance when the Marauders defence got themselves in a tisswass from what looked like a harmless situation, Shaun Archer crossed and Neil Storey converted, 8 - 16.

Moorends bombed a real chance to extend their lead when Shaun Carver scattered the defence in front of him and then sent a bad ball out to Wayne Green would have only needed to fall over if he could have held the ball.

Chris Housley and Jason Blanchard made great yardage before Wayne Green recovered a bad ball to force himself over in the corner on 31 minutes, 8 - 20.

The Moorends forward were looking tireless tacklers in defence with Gaz Everton, Gav Millward, Roger McClean and Gaz Munro all standing out, the solid tackling forced the home team into a kicking game which both Andy Smeaton and Wayne Southgate did with pin point attacking kicks that included bombs, chips, and grubbers.

The Marauders never looked like breaking with Chris Housley, Jason Blanchard, Adam Lloyd and Wayne Green looking very dangerous when returning the ball.

It was from a Adam Lloyd return and quick play the ball that set up Dean Armstrong to jump the slow defence before sending Ben Hoffman crashing through - Hoffmann found the supporting Armstrong before receiving the ball back to walk over for a try converted by Ryan Rafferty, 8 - 26

Half- Time Rossington Sharks 8 - 26 Moorends-Thorne Marauders

On the resumption of the game the Marauders took a firm grip, Gav Millward carried the ball well into the Sharks territory before sending Brendan Neal through only to be brought down 20 metres out, Ryan Rafferty, Chris Allen and Mark Roach linked to send Shaun Carver thundering onto the ball squatting off defenders before going over for a try on 46 minutes, 8 - 30.

Rossington were playing on the back foot now with the Marauders being very dominant in every department, this however could have been the undoing of the visitors as they started to try and make passers that they would not have usually tried resulting in less completed sets of six.

Wayne Green used his experience to steady the ship and keep the scoreboard ticking over with a 56 minute drop goal from 30 metres out, 8 - 31.

From the restart Mark Roach fielded the kick off on his own try line, starting on his run he went the full length of the field showing all his footwork skills to breach the Sharks defence before winning the footrace into the corner, Ryan Rafferty converted, 8 - 37.

Rossington became under siege from the Marauders but excellent last ditch tackles by veteran second row Barry Richardson and Tom Lyons keep the Marauders at bay, in attack it was the kicking options of Wayne Southgate and Andy Smeaton that was the biggest threat to the Marauders.

The final score of the game the Marauders way with the ball being moved to the right Tom Brandham found Wayne Green on the touch line who - Green got round Barwick and then stood the Sharks cover defence up when he went inside and then back to the outside to out pace everyone to the try line, Ryan Rafferty Converted, 8 - 43.

Rotherham Giants (Won) 10 - 34
  Giants 10 - 34 Marauders

Moorends-Thorne Marauders reached the half way stage in the Lincolnshire and South Yorkshire league program with a 100% win record, Head Coach Peter Green said we were a little peeved with the tactics deployed by our opposition that never really got stamped on by the referee, I was immensely proud of how my much younger and smaller team stood up to be counted and finally dominate the collision.

The first quarter of the game was a very untidy period with the Marauders being the only side who were attempting to play Rugby League Football whilst the Giants seemed to be hell bent on trying to physically stamp some kind of authority over their South Yorkshire cousins.

After defending for most of the game the Giants again piggybacked the Marauders up the field by a series of head tackles, Shaun Carver came off the bench on 17 minutes and powered himself over the top of the Giants scoring straight from the tap penalty, 0 - 4.

Roger McClean returned the kick-off and again was fouled by a head tackle, Ryan Rafferty reached the half way line with his penalty kick,

Alex Palmer and Gavin Millward sucked in the Rotherham defence with good angled running, quick play the balls gave Mark Roach the opening to glide through - with only the full back to beat Roach fired out the perfect pass to Ryan Rafferty who was supporting the break to score a try he converted himself, 0 - 10.

Rotherham started to play a little after being given a period of possession when the Marauders defence got caught off side twice, Rotherham really looked a far better side than in the opening half hour as they cut out the rough stuff, this resulted in Duncan Henderson going over from acting half after faking to pass and going himself for a well taken try converted by Chris Chapman, 6 - 10.

Half-Time Rotherham Giants 6 - 10 Moorends-Thorne Marauders

A stern half time talk from Peter Green mainly aimed at the whinging being directed towards the referee by the players - Green pointed out it was not the referee who had made the high tackles or forward passes.

Excellent powerful driving by Steve Allen and Shaun Carver had the Giants on the back foot giving Chris Allen the half chance needed for him to step himself over for a try on 45 minutes converted by Ryan Rafferty, 6 - 16.

Moorends stamped their authority even more on the game 3 minutes later, Tom Brandham and Mark Roach combined to move the ball wide, Chris (Locksmith) Allen again opened the door with a perfect pass to Wayne Green, his pace and power had the home defence rooted to the spot as he ghosted over to ground the ball, Ryan Rafferty converting, 6 - 22.

Excellent backs play involving Greg Mills, Dean Wright and Adam Pickles took the Marauders deep inside the Giants territory, driving by Gaz Munro, Wayne Rafferty and Gav Millward sucked the defence in, Tom Brandham took full advantage by taking the ball from acting half back to be met on the try line by three would be tacklers - showing great strength Brandham reached out to score, Ryan Rafferty converted, 6 - 28.

Rotherham pulled a try back on the hour when Craig Weston and Bryn Evans moved the ball to the left for Dan Crabbis to hit the gap and score out wide, 10 - 28.

The game fell back into a quagmire of penalties as the Giants could sense the game had gone away from them, this was displayed when Gaz Munro and Wayne Green made a massive hit on the Giants main enforcer John Williams which saw him leaving the field with concussion brought on by the impact in the collision.

Chris Allen again opened up the Giants on 72 minutes - unselfishly putting Craig Hookway in under the posts when he could have gone himself, Ryan Rafferty added his fifth conversion of the game, 10 - 34

Chris Allen showing all his illusive skills ghosted through the Forgers defence to sprint 30 metres for a try converted by Rafferty, 40 - 4.

Ryan Rafferty became provider when he sucked in the visitors before sending Ben Hoffman charging over for a try converted by Ryan Rafferty, 46 - 4.

Wayne Green then added two identical long range tries on 52 and 54 minutes with Ryan Rafferty converting one, 56 - 4.

Chris Allen went from the base of the scrum on the half way line leaving the Forgers defence in his slip stream, Ryan Rafferty converted, 62 - 4.

Sheffield were rewarded for their courage when Tom Else skipped round Hookway to race 30 metres for a try converted by Dan Gray, 62 - 10.

Wayne Green came up with a new club summer record (5 tries in a game) when he was on the end of a flowing move to the right, stepping inside he dummied and darted over, Converted by Ryan Rafferty, 68 - 10.

Moorends came up with a great centre/wing partnership try on 72 minutes, Greg Mills and Adam Lloyd combined - Lloyd turned the Forgers defence inside out on a long 70 metre run for a try, Ryan Rafferty converted, 74 -10.

The last score came on the 76th minute when Chris Allen broke the visitors defence just inside his own half, he raced 30 metres before sending his younger brother the last 20 metres to score, Ryan Rafferty converted, 80 - 10.

Wayne Green went over for his second try on 56 minutes, Wayne Rafferty sucking in four defenders from a good drive, his quick play the ball allowed Shaun Carver to crash through the Knight defence before off loading to the supporting Green who finished the last 20 metres at a canter, 10 -36.

Green became provider for the next Moorends try, deciding to run the ball on the last tackle Green was stopped 15 metres out but instead of dieing with the ball he threw out a speculative pass that Adam Pickle caught at pace to crash over, Ryan Rafferty converted, 10 - 42.

From the kick-off 17 year-old Alex (baby face assassin) Palmer made a massive hit on the

Barbarians ball carrier forcing the ball loose, from the resulting scrum Chris Allen sent Jason Blanchard over for a converted try, 1 - 72.

The last 20 minutes saw the Marauders bombing chances as they forced the pass when normally they would have gone to ground, however they did manage to put a further 24 points on the board coming from Chris Allen, Adam Pickles, Craig Hookway, Danny Hornsby and Ryan Rafferty who also added a further 2 conversions, 1 - 96.

Rossington Sharks (Won) 62 - 8
  Marauders 62 - 8 Sharks

Moorends-Thorne Marauders won the battle of the districts two Rugby League Conference clubs with a resounding 62 - 8 home victory over Rossington Sharks.

Both teams set off trying to dominate the arm wrestle in the first 15 minutes, the Marauders had Roger McClean, Gav Millward and Wayne Rafferty doing the hard yards with the visitors being well served by Gareth Burns and Pat O’Donovon, it however took two pieces of skill rather than muscle to open the door for the first time, Chris Allen launched a perfect cross field bomb that Wayne Green plucked high out of the sky before sending Alex Palmer over in the corner, 4 - 0.

Moorends then started to turn the screw, Gaz Everton dominated the collision sucking in and scattering defenders before being brought down, a quick play the ball saw Tom Brandham linking with Mark Roach and Chris Allen to send Jason Blanchard over in the corner, 8 - 0.

Peter Greens coaching was bearing fruit and on 26 minutes a combination of angled running and silky ball skills saw Wayne Rafferty using quick late feet to ghost through the Sharks defence for another unconverted try, 12 - 0.

Ben Hoffmann and Shaun Carver made two outstanding drives to take the Marauders within 10 metres of the try line, dummy running and quick hands to the right saw Wayne Green hitting the gap made for him by Mark Roach before crossing the whitewash, Ryan Rafferty missed the conversion, 16 - 0.

Gaz Everton again scattered the Sharks defence making 30 metres before setting up Ryan Rafferty to go in under the posts, this time the illusive half-back added the two extra points, 22 - 0.

Moorends received the feed at a scrum 10 metres inside their own half, Chris Allen fired a quick pass off the floor to Mark Roach who dummied to pass before setting off on a 60 metre run to the try line dummying Tom Burns on his way to scoring, Ryan Rafferty converted, 28 - 0.

Half-Time Marauders 28 - 0 Sharks

Rossington opened the second half with Scott Smith being the biggest threat to the Marauders with his prompting and darting from dummy half which had started to take the Sharks forward, with every thing being thrown at them Alex Palmer Gav Millward and Ben Hoffman stood tall in defence down the middle, this forced Reece Storr to try his hand with a long pass, Storr however didn’t bank on the ever vigilant Wayne Green who intercepted the pass before racing 80 metres to score, Ryan Rafferty converted, 34 - 0.

Shaun Carver, Gav Millward and Greg Mills moved the Marauders deep inside the Sharks territory before Danny Hornsby set Wayne Green on a stepping run that turned the visitors defence inside out before sending Alex Palmer over on 49 minutes, 38 - 0.

Palmer went over for his third try three minutes later - again after the forwards had built a perfect platform for Danny Hornsby and Mark Roach to open the Sharks up providing the pass for Alex Palmer to hit and roll over, Ryan Rafferty converted, 44 - 0.

Sharks new signing Scott Smith finally got some reward for his prompting going over for a cheap try from acting half-back to pull four points back for the Sharks 44 - 4.

Blockbusting prop Gaz Everton once again shattered the Sharks defence before off loading to Wayne Green - Green’s quick hands found Chris Allen who’s accurate pass saw Mark Roach cutting through the scrambling defence before going over, Ryan Rafferty adding the extra points, 50 - 4.

The Marauders improved their lead further on 69 minutes when Craig Hookway caused problems with his strong running, Tom Brandham jumped at the play the ball sending Chris Allen towards the Sharks defenders a great angled run by Greg Mills saw him breach the defence before sending his winger Jason Blanchard over unopposed, Ryan Rafferty converted, 56 - 4.

Craig Hookway was rewarded on 72 minutes when he cleared his line crashing through the first line of defenders 15 metres from his own try line before handing off two more would be cover tacklers and out pacing the rest of the Sharks on his 85 metre run to the try line, Ryan Rafferty converted, 62 - 4.

With five minutes remaining the Sharks had the last say in the affair with Daz Burns forcing himself over from close range, 62 - 8.

Rotherham Giants (Won) 62 - 10
  Marauders 62 - 10 Giants

With the clock ticking towards the divisional play offs Moorends-Thorne Marauders achieved a clean 10 match sweep in the Lincolnshire & South Yorkshire division with a 62 - 10 home victory against a very large and robust Rotherham Giants, 17 year-old Alex Palmer again staked a claim for the player of the year with another outstanding man of the match performance to go within 1 point of the un-available leader Chris Allen.

Moorends started the game in a very sloppy fashion gifting the visitors a try after only 4 minutes when the defence failed to field a very armless kick which the Giants managed to re-gain possession of the football before twisting and barging over under the posts for a converted try, 0 - 6.

Peter Greens uncompromising pep talk kick started the Marauders into action, Wayne Green crabbed across field drawing the defence before sending Jason Blanchard over in the corner for a unconverted try, 4 - 6.

4 minutes later Gav Millward popped up a superb ball for Mark Roach to send Blanchard punching through the Giants defence before turning the ball back inside to Alex Palmer, drawing the defence he calmly sent Ryan Rafferty over under the posts, Rafferty extended the lead with the conversion, 10 - 6.

From the kick off the forwards hard running took them well into the visitors territory before Ryan Rafferty, Mark Roach and Brendan Neil linked to send Jason Blanchard striding through again the Rotherham full-back was left holding thin air as the ball was turned back to the Marauding Chris Housley who had joined the attack from the opposite wing, Ryan Rafferty adding the extras, 16 - 6.

After completing a set of six the Marauders strong defence had the visitors coughing up the football when Gaz Everton and Rhys Bailey made a strong hit on a Giants forward, from the scrum the Marauders controlled the ball and a lovely grubber by Roach saw him win the race for the ball to flick it into the path of Chris Housley who stepped inside the Giants defence to race 20 metres under the posts, Ryan Rafferty adding the conversion, 22 - 6.

The Marauders kept the pressure on the Giants and where awarded a penalty on 20 minutes for holding down, with the Marauders hungry and thinking quicker Danny Hornsby took a quick tap penalty which saw Adam Pickles showing great strength and leg power to drive over in the corner, 26 - 6.

The remaining 20 minutes of the first half saw the Marauders becoming victims of some very poor refereeing around the tackle area, in their desperation to slow the Marauders down the Giants constantly held down the tackled player and had players joining the tackle flopping well after the referee had called held, these illegal tactics kept the Giants in the game and from a short kick through the Marauders fumbled the ball that allowed the Giants to help themselves to a converted try, 26 - 10.

Half-Time Marauders 26 - 10 Giants

After a very constructive team talk the Marauders came out with guns blazing attacking the Giants try line, holding out and having to drop out from under their posts the Giants found themselves again on the back foot, Wayne Green showed pace power and agility to step himself through the defence before handing of the full-ball before going over on 44 minutes, Ryan Rafferty converted, 32 - 10.

The Giants enjoyed a brief period of ball possession but were never really a threat to the solid defence of Ben Hoffman, Wayne Rafferty and Shaun Carver who’s new found fitness is seeing him putting himself about the park, the Giants were forced to kick on the last tackle and a lucky bounce saw Adam Pickles collect the ball for the Marauders and outpace the Rotherham cover defence into the corner before going on behind the posts, Ryan Rafferty converting, 38 - 10.

On the hour mark a combination of fitness and some superb interchanging by Peter Green saw the Marauders forward dominating their bigger counter parts, Millward, Hoffman, Bailey & Alex Palmer making huge in roads, big Gaz Everton block busting running scattered the would be tacklers before sending his supporting hooker Danny Hornsby unopposed under the posts on 65 minutes, Ryan Rafferty converting, 44 - 10.

Not to be out done by the pack the backs linked to put on a great show of handling football for the next Marauders try, Mark Roach, Wayne Green and his centre partner Brendan Neil combined to send the illusive Ryan Rafferty stepping through the last reminiscences of a shattered Rotherham defence before sending his 16 year-old loose-forward Rhys Bailey on a 30 metre charge under the sticks, Ryan Rafferty converting 50 - 10.

5 minutes later the Marauder had the feed at a scrum just inside the Giants half, Ryan Rafferty found Mark Roach who had changed his attacking option running around the formed packs to send Wayne Green away with a clever inside ball to give Ryan Rafferty a easy conversion, 56 - 10.

The Marauders rounded the game off on 76 minutes with a fine individual try from skipper Mark Roach, after placing a grubber kick into the corner Roach attacked the ball carrying Giant stealing the ball one on one 15 metres from the Giants try line before strolling over for a captains try, Ryan Rafferty had the last say in the game with the conversion, 62 - 10.
