  Marauders 25 - 20 Knights

Moorends-Thorne Marauders 25 - 20 Lincoln City Knights

Moorends turned round at half-time coasting 20 - 6 against a below strength Knights outfit and a 11 - 6 penalty count in favour of the Knights, this possession was equalised out with a 9 - 7 scrum count in the Marauders favour.

The game was never allowed to break into a classic or even the usual free flowing game that is normally served up by these two teams, the usual first quarter arm wrestle appeared as always expected when these two teams meet, it was broken after a short period of pressure deep inside the Knights half of the field after Moorends were awarded a penalty for a head high tackle, from the resulting penalty the strong running Gareth Everton powered over scattering defenders in his way for the first score of the game, 4 - 0.

The game continued to chug along error filled and whistle happy, a big hit from Gav Millward and Jason Blanchard forced the ball free, Mark Roach scooped it up and with Alex Palmer supporting and the line begging the referee brought him back to award the Marauders a scrum instead of the advantage, justice was served up when from the scrum Roach dummied through the first line of defenders and won the foot race into the corner for a  28th minute unconverted try, 8 - 0.

The Marauders had the upper hand and where soon back deep inside the Knights territory pounding their try line which was being kept safe with some excellent defence, it took the pace and power of Wayne Green to open the door after he had re-appeared after breaking his nose in the 5th minute, Green went from acting half 10 metres out on the last tackle crashing over with two defenders hanging onto him, this time Ryan Rafferty converted from the touch line, 14 - 0.

Lincoln dominated the next 5 minutes and this resulted in a try from Johnny Ledger, the Marauders defence looked solid but Ledger took full advantage when the Marauders had three men in the previous tackle and a Lincoln player came in and tackled Ryan Rafferty off the tackled player, Rafferty protested to the referee’s deaf ear and Ledger shot from half back to score and convert the try, 14 - 6

Moorends came back with the ideal reply to the protested try when excellent footwork and passing saw the Marauders go deep into the Knights territory, quick hands to the right saw Mark Roach drop the ball off to Shaun Carver who crashed through and over the top of three would be tacklers, Ryan Rafferty converted, 20 - 6

Half-Time Moorends-Thorne Marauders 20 - 6 Lincoln City Knights

Wayne Green added a 45 minute drop goal for the Marauders before the Knights kicked into gear catching the home side dozing, Meehal Grint went over after 55 minutes from a lovely angled run going over in the corner 21 - 10.

John Turners powerful running found a chink in the Moorends armour going over the top of a would be tackler for the next Knights try on 68 minutes, 21 - 14.

The Marauders by know had started to look down the barrel of a shot gun when Graham Cass brought desperate times to the Marauders, Gareth Evans drew the Marauders defence deep inside his own half before releasing Cass on a long race which he won to go in under the posts, the try was converted by Gareth Evans on 74 minutes, 21 - 20

The last 16 minutes were dominated by the visitors who were unlucky when they had a try disallowed with 3 minutes to go that look perfectly OK.

Moorends kick into gear themselves in the last couple of minutes when a completed set of six saw the kick deflected into the path of Tom Brandham who’s quick hands found Ryan Rafferty, Erafferty drew the last of the Knights defence before sending Mark Roach in under the posts, Ryan Rafferty missed the easy kick to sum up the Marauders poor performance.

Lincolnshire & Sth Yorkshire Grand Final 2008
  Marauders 36 Vs 28 Knights

Moorends-Thorne Marauders had to much strike power and displayed the ability to score from anywhere of the field completely controlling the game until the 66th minute sin binning of Greg Mills against a tough and well drilled RAF packed Lincoln City Knights.

The first 10 minutes was a typical end to end Marauders v Knights game as both teams set about the arm wrestle with their normal vigour , the deadlock was broken after Gaz Everton and Gavin Millwards hard driving sucked in the Knights defence, quick hands from Tom Brandham and Mark Roach found Steve Allen who opened up the Knights drawing the cover defence before slipping a beautiful inside ball to his brother Chris Allen to crash over for the first score of the game, ironically an ex RAF man himself, Ryan Rafferty added the extras, 6 - 0

Moorends allowed Lincoln back into the game when they where penalised in front of their goal for not playing the ball correctly, Moorends defended their line tackling the Knights just short before Gaz Evans darted over for a try in the corner. Evans also added the extras, 6 -6

Lincoln continued to defend superbly for long periods, ultimately being penalised for off side, Alex Palmer, Ben Hoffman and Roger McClean all made telling runs, the ball was spread wide before Ryan Rafferty brought Wayne Green back on the inside, Green displayed quick late feet to slice through the defence going over on 23 minutes, Ryan Rafferty adding the extra points on offer, 12 - 6.

The Marauders extended their lead 6 minutes later, Craig Hookway and Chris Allen made the room for Mark Roach to attack the Knights line and eventually popping the ball up for Steve Allen to score in the corner, Ryan Rafferty converting, 18 - 6.

Shaun Carver was making a big impact and on several occasions it took three and Four Knights to haul him to the ground, this allowed the Moorends half-backs the time and space to work and Steve Allen the chance to create havoc down the left channel offloading in the tackle setting up Hoffman for a simple touchdown on 37 minutes, Ryan Rafferty converting, 24 - 6.

The Marauders were penalised for flopping in the last minute of the first half, again Lincoln punished the home side for their lapse of concentration, Doncaster born Dale Jinks showed strength to off load in the tackle setting up Nathan Parkin for a try out wide. 24 - 10

Half-Time Moorends-Thorne Marauders 24 - 10 Lincoln City Knights

Moorends extended their lead 7 minutes into the second half when they decided to run the ball on the last tackle, attacking the Knights left flank, good defence by the Knights and the Marauders ability to off load brought the ball back to Craig Hookway who put in a cross field kick to the opposite side of the field, Chris Allen won the jump for the ball quickly setting Greg Mills away who in turn sent Jason Blanchard over in the corner with two defenders on his back. 28 - 10.

Adam Pickles returned a Knights kick back to the half way line, his quick play the the ball saw Tom Brandham jump from acting half feeding Chris Allen who broke the Knights defence galloping 20 metres sending Wayne Green further into the Knights territory before returning the ball back to Allen, Chris Allen again found his brother Steve in support, Steve Allen held off his would be tacklers to crash over the whitewash on 60 minutes, 32 - 10.

With the Marauders strolling in the sun a combination of being in the comfort zone and the sin binning of their left centre Greg Mills on 62 minutes for retaliation gave Lincoln a 10 minute period of domination which started within seconds, using their one man advantage Gareth Evans sent Dale Jinks over with a wonderful short ball, Evans converted, 32 - 16.

Moorends looked flustered and stuned, very poor tackling allowed Lincoln in for a great individual try 5 minutes later by Steve Blagdan, John Turner gave Blagdan the ball with with a wall of Marauders in front of him, Blagdan fended off tacklers on three occasions on his way to the try line, Evans converted, 32 - 22.

Gareth Evans again exploited the numbers with a sweet long ball that saw Meehal Grint scoring in the corner, Evans again landing the touch line conversion, 32 - 28.

Lincoln were denied the chance to draw level when Grint looked to have a clear run into the corner but was caught and bundled into touch by prop forward Gavin Millward, this and the return of Greg Mills lifted the Marauders and on 74 minutes business was resumed, Craig Hookway burst onto a short ball breaking the Knights defence before sending Wayne Green on a long run rounding Chris Green going over in the corner, 36 - 28

Full-Time Moorends-Thorne Marauders 36 - 28 Lincoln City Knights

Headcoach Peter Green said after the early wrestle in the first 10 minutes we dominated and carried to many strike players for the Knights, We know that they never let their heads go down and will play for the full 80 minutes, we gifted them their two first half tries from silly penalties and in the second half we found ourselves in cruise control, this coupled with the sin binning caught us knapping, again their 10 minutes of glory was a gift when we had a player sin binned, full credit to the Knights especially their Stand-off who opened us up twice during the period that they had the numerical advantage.

CO-OPERATIVE RUGBY LEAGUE CONFERENCE REGIONAL – NORTHERN SEMI FINAL

BRIDLINGTON BULLS 10 MOORENDS-THORNE MOOR MARAUDERS 68

Moorends-Thorne Moor Marauders will get the change to go one better than 2006 when they play in their second RLC Grand Final in a fortnight.

Beaten 36-30 by Liverpool then, they looked in ominously good form as they ran Bridlington ragged at Rochdale.

With midfield triangle Ryan Rafferty and Chris and Steve Allen ruling the roost along with impressive full back Wayne Green, they dominated from the 8th minute.

Both sides made a tentative start, Mark Roach kicking out on the full for Moorends and Bulls centre Nicky Mercer losing possession after a 30 metre break, the first of the contest.

A second Mercer dropped ball gave Marauders the initiative and they struck twice inside four minutes.

Steve and Chris Allen made good ground and quick passing to the right from Tom Brandham, Wayne Green and Greg Mills sent in speedy Adam Pickles.

Rafferty converted and then exerted a key influence on proceedings, jinking to the posts after Brandham sent him clear and then capitalising on a power play, spinning away from the cover and sending Ben Hoffman, in support, to the posts.

Rafferty’s third goal made it 18-0 and only a fine tackle from Stu Beadle on his opposite number Wayne Green after a 70 metre break kept the Bulls in the game.

Skipper Ben Lawry tried to get the Bulls moving forward with a fine off load to Paul Campbell but too often their kicking game let them down.

Their brief revival was ended when fine interplay between Roach and Steve Allen sent Shaun Carver powering over to make it 24-0 in as many minutes.

Moorends were twice penalised for dissent in possession and then a high tackle and Bulls conjured their best move, Joe Hall, Lawry, Tom Radley and Oliver Smith giving Tom Keeping a chance in the corner but Jason Blanchard superbly held him out.

Thorne forced a drop out through Hoffman’s persistence but knocked on from it and from a kick from the base of the scrum, Keeping rolled Blanchard in to touch but again Bridlington could not capitalise.

Hard working Dave Robson’s offload was intercepted by Mills who made 70 metres down the touchline, Campbell stopping him with illegal use of the knees and visiting the sin bin along with Rafferty for dissent.

That hardly derailed Moorends, impressive Steve Allen running on to Roach’s pass from deep to cross, Wayne Green successfully taking over the kicking duties and then adding a drop goal on the last tackle of the next set.

He then shrugged off the cover to go over out wide and added an excellent touchline conversion and, from the re-start, Roach threw a dummy as the cover melted away and Green’s goal made it 43-0 to end a one-sided first period.

Marauders continued to live up to their name in the first set of the second period, Pickles searing clear from 60 metres on an arcing run from his wing to go over by the posts.

Wayne Green brought up the half century in the next set with another mesmerising solo run on the back of penalty and good work by Hoffman and Roach.

Making sure they got reward for each set, Wayne Green dropped another goal to make it 56-0 after Rafferty had been dragged back into play when looking certain to dart over with Chris Allen again prominent in the build up.

Brandham was sin binned for an elbow in the tackle and in his absence his opposite number Joe Hall scooted over to open the Bulls account after more perseverance from Robson.

Bridlington looked to have added a second from Chris King’s crossfield kick, Campbell and Luke Thompson sending Mercer to the line but he was held up.

Thorne did not spurn their next opportunity on the back of a drop out, Rafferty, Wayne Green and Alex Palmer sending Mills in, Rafferty missing the first shot at goal by the Marauders.

Bridlington deserved credit for staying positive, although they twice lost possession in promising positions and, with Robson again the go to man, Tom Radley twisted out of tackles close in to plant the ball down between the posts.

Moorends-Thorne-Marauders ended strongly; Roach, Dean Wright, and the Allen’s sending Gareth Munro over on the left out wide and Rafferty showing too much pace and guile on a last tackle play in the final minute to complete a comprehensive 12-try success.

National Final
  Marauders 38 Vs 20 Sonics
THE CO-OPERATIVE RUGBY LEAGUE CONFERENCE REGIONAL GRAND FINAL 2008 -

BRISTOL SONICS 20 MOORENDS-THORNE MOOR MARAUDERS 38 - Derby RFC, Haslams

The guile of man of the match Chris Allen and the scoring power of centres
Greg Mills and Wayne Green, who both bagged a brace, proved to be the
difference in the Regional decider.

Sonics produced a highly creditable display in their first final after a
poor start, their endeavour best summed up by the hard work of loose forward
Neil Holder who recovered from a big early hit to continually take the ball
up to a more experienced, bigger pack.

Bristol lost possession on the opening tackle but held out, before
threatening through Sam Barker and diligent young hooker Harry Marson.

Elusive Ryan Rafferty made the first clean break for Marauders, linking well
with Craig Hookway, Ed Tofts going for an interception but knocking on, and
from the scrum Steve Allen set the position for Gavin Millward to power over
after four minutes, Rafferty converting.

Sonics had another tilt with Holder and James Prichard prominent and were
awarded a penalty close in but the tap was forward.

On the counter, Thorne posted a second try, Tom Brandham giving Chris Allen
the space to put his long striding brother Steve over.

Again Bristol got into promising territory only for Wes Rogers to lose the
ball and a swift exchange through Rafferty and Chris Allen sent Mills
powering clear to make it 18-0 after only 16 minutes.

Ben Hoffman shot away up the middle for the Marauders but could not find his
support and on the back of consecutive penalties, Stafford Lloyd drove to
the line but Holder's pass to Tofts went to ground.

Sonics got a reprieve when Marauders were penalised in possession on their
own ten for dissent and Nick Carter's fine cut out pass sent Dave Murray in
at the corner.

Having gained a foothold, Rogers went high on Mark Roach and Bristol were
then caught offside, Green tracking cross field and Hofmann sending Roach
stepping out of tackles to go over between the posts, Rafferty adding his
fourth goal.

Again over-excitement scuppered the Sonics, good work by the halves
squandered with lost ball when close in and threatening.

In contrast, on their next set Moorends ran a power play on the last,
Rafferty and Roach putting Alex Palmer into space, Green cutting inside to
cross and Rafferty landing a fine goal to make it 30-4 at the break.

Moorends tried a similar move on their next set as a thunder shower
gathered, Sonics scrambling well to deny Hookway and Roach.

Although they dropped the re-start, Marauders were back into scoring mode
within three minutes of the resumption.

Tofts was penalised and after Hofmann and Rafferty combined in midfield,
swift passing to the left by Rafferty and Roach allowed Chris Allen to send
in Mills for his second.

Jason Blanchard raced clear down the right but his pass was intercepted by
Murray who made good ground and after Chris Allen had been denied, Holder
made a fine break from the base of the scrum for Bristol, carried on by Dane
Weaver.

Marson and Swann had charges and on the last, Elliott Nightingale crashed
over in the corner as the men from the South West showed commendable spirit.

Swann was again instrumental in gaining good field position from a scrum and
his solo weaving run was rewarded with a fine try between the posts, which
he converted.

Rafferty was just held on the try line for Moorends and Nightingale did
particularly well to clear a deft kick to the Sonics' in-goal area.

Bristol lost the ball and were made to pay on the hour, Brandham and Chris
Allen - again with the money ball - sending in Green.

Shaun Carver twice broke clear and lost the ball in his exuberance but
Bristol earned the plaudits for hanging on in for the final quarter; Tofts,
breaking clear and wingers Nightingale and Murray impressive, Johan Schoeman
taking a rebound to deservedly cross between the posts to complete the
scoring and win the second half.

As the rain began to teem down, Moorends-Thorne picked up their first summer
trophy at their second attempt and began singing in it.
