Thorne Moor Marauders opened their second Rugby League Conference with a hard fought victory away at new boys Lincoln City Knights. The first 15 minutes saw the City Knights having 80% of the territorial advantage the Marauders added to this by constantly not completing their sets and were being caught off side at an alarming rate.
On 15 minutes Craig Hookway made a break that saw him stopped 5 metres short of the Knights line from the quick play the ball Brett Staveley crashed over for the first score of the afternoon, Ryan Rafferty added the two extra points 0 - 6.
The Marauders started to complete their sets and this started to show in gaining better field position this again resulted in a try with Dave Knott latching on to a great pass from Mark Roach, he spilt the Knights defence to outpace the home teams defence to score between the posts Rafferty again added the extras 0 - 12.
The game was still evenly balanced with Dan & Karl Beardshaw superbly marshalling the Knights around the park, Ross O`Loughlin, Paul Hamnett & John Turner all came close for the Knights before the Marauders again after a long period of defending broke down the left wing for new union convert Ricky Tipper went in again under the posts for a easy conversion by Rafferty 0 - 18.
The Knights responded straight away with their outstanding centre Ross O`Loughlin crashing in going over the top of three Thorne defenders for a unconverted try to bring the score to 4 - 18 at half time.

The Lincoln City Knights started the second half the way they had the first with all guns blazing but this time it resulted in blind side prop Dave Rider crashing over after good work from Gareth Philips and Glen Wright, Steve Hughes added the extra two points 10 - 18.
Thorne Moor Marauders gradually started to put things together over the next 15 minutes and this resulted in excellent inter change passing from Kev Harmer, Mark Roach, and Shaun Carver who supplied the final pass for Craig Hookway to go over for a unconverted try 10 - 22, the game was held up for 15 minutes for the air ambulance to Thornes second row forward Brett Staveley to Hospital with a neck injury, at the restart the Marauders went crashing over with last seasons RLC player of the year Shaun Carver taking a couple of defenders with him 10 - 26.
Lincoln pressed the Marauders try line for the next 10 minutes and when Ross O`Loughlin went over to make the score 14 - 26 with 5 minutes remaining the Knights could sense a potential victory.
Lincoln never say die attitude brought them the final try in the game when John Turner went in next to the corner flag 18 - 26

Thorne Moor Marauders 50 - 6 Worksop Sharks
half-time 18 - 6

Mark Roach was captain courageous leading his team from the front with a four try haul, his first try came after just four minutes when he charged down and re-gathered a Sharks kick to go in at the corner to give the Marauders an early lead 4 - 0.
The lead was short lived when Craig Lovelock and Michael Quinn moved the ball wide with the final pass going to Chris Miller who went in just to the right of the posts on 6 minutes, Dave Collinson added the extra two points 4 - 6,
Both teams where moving the ball around in windy conditions and it was Thorne Moor Marauders who drew the next blood on 11 minutes with a flowing move that involved Ryan Rafferty, Chris Pearson, Chris Allen and finally the try scorer Ricky Tipper 8 -6, Thorne Moor then had two tries pulled back for forward passes before Steve Allen bust the visitors defence and unloaded to his brother Chris who in turn put the supporting Craig Hookway in to score on 30 minutes 12 - 6.
With Thorne starting to gain the upper hand debut boy Paul Randall (Selby RU) scattered the Sharks defence to take the play just short of the try line, Big Andy Evans came crashing onto a short ball from Mark Roach to score next to the post on 37 minutes, Ryan Rafferty added the extra points 18 - 6
Half-Time Thorne Moor Marauders 18 - 6 Worksop Sharks

Straight from the kick off Thorne Moor moved the ball wide catching Worksop cold quick hands by Kev Harmer and Martin Rowlands gave Mark Roach the time to dummy his way through before sending Nathan Hazlewood in at the corner on 41 minutes.
With Thorne now stepping up a gear and becoming more clinical with their sets of six Ryan Rafferty crashed on to a short ball from Dean Armstrong and on his way to the try line sold two outrageous dummies before grounding the ball on 47 minutes, Mark Roach added the extra points 28 - 6.
The Marauders defence was now getting on top with big tackles coming in from Speight, Key and Steve Allen
Mark Roach and Ryan Rafferty where now working hard behind their pack a quick run around saw Mark Roach dropping the ball off to Steve Allen who crashed through the visiting defence and stepped the fullback to go in under the posts Mark Roach again added the extra points 34 - 6
Worksop were still working hard with Gareth Everton, Lee Wilks and Gavin Millward all working hard going forward but it was but it was the Thorne stand off who came up with the next try, from the quick play the ball on 61 minutes Mark Roach raced from acting half to out sprint the Sharks defence from 40 metres out going in next to the posts, Roach converted his own try 40 - 6.
The game was becoming the Mark Roach show, he popped up again on 70 minutes on the shoulder of Chris Allen who sent him away to race half the length of the field being chased down by Anton Kalmar who just failed to stop him scoring in the corner, Roach added the difficult kick to take the score to 46 - 6,
Six minutes later Roach added his fourth try of the game when he followed up a brilliant kick by Martin Rowlands to touch down in the corner 50 - 6.

Gamestar : Mark Roach was at his exciting best.

Game breaker : The try by Nathan Hazlewood at the start of the second half took the wind out of the Sharks sails after a dogged first half in which they competed for everything.

DERBY CITY produced a tremendous performance to beat THORNE MOOR MARAUDERS 36-24 in the battle of the unbeaten sides, The Marauders opened the scoring when new signing Clifton Richardson put the Marauders ahead in the fifth minute for the first try of the game when Mark Roach drew the defence and Richardson powered between to would be tacklers for a unconverted try 0 - 4,
Derby settled and within 5 minutes pulled back a converted try by Mark Henderson converted by Lee Chapman 6 - 4. The Marauders who were resting the majority of their squad because of their involvement in the Yorkshire senior cup took the lead again with an unconverted carbon copy try by Clifton Richardson 6 - 8.
The game was a stop start affair and both teams struggled a little with a very fussy referee but the game was played in a good spirit by both sides. Thorne extended their lead on 28 minutes when new union convert Ricky Tipper outpaced the home defence after good work by Hookway, Roach and Rowlands for yet another unconverted try 6 - 12. Head coach then withdrew Gaz Munroe from the fray to save him for the Yorkshire senior cup final, then within 1 minute the Marauders lost their strong running fullback Craig Hookway with a broken hand and also had last years Rugby League Conference player of the year sin binned, during this spell Derby took full advantage and ran in a 26 - 12 half-time lead with tries from Gavin Morrisey, Russell Dixon twice and Chris Buckley cross the line with Chapman adding 1 conversion to set up a 26-12 lead at half time.

Thorne rallied in the second half with the introduction of Ryan Rafferty and Nathan Hazlewood the Marauders moved with more fluency putting the home defence under pressure Paul Hopkinson shot through a gap to ground the ball but the referee disallowed the try saying the ball had been grounded on a defenders foot, in their next attack the Marauders did cross the line when on the last tackle Nathan Hazlewood followed up a kick from Ryan Rafferty to pounce on the loose ball Ryan Rafferty converted 26 - 18.
With most of the experienced players on the touch line Derby took full advantage scoring two more tries by
Ben Thornton and Lee Chapman who also added a goal 36 - 18, The Marauder put Shaun Carver on for the last 10 minutes and with the aid of Danny Lake playing his first game for over a year brought the opportunity for Paul Hopkinson to dive over for a converted try by Ryan Rafferty to bring the final score to 36 - 24.

Head coach Chris Allen said it was a good run out for a few of the lads who are on the fringes, we were made to pay for the sin binning that came at a crucial time for us I brought Gaz Munroe of to rest him for Thursday night and we lost of Craig Hookway with a broken hand, the young lads did well with two getting into the man of the match points and one of the debutants Jamie Goodwin taking second place and the other two scoring three tries between them.

Thorne Moor Marauders travelled to bottom club Mansfield Storm looking to get back to winning ways, the home team took an early 4 minute lead slotting over a close range penalty when Wayne Rafferty was caught off-side in front the goals.
The Marauders were struggling to master the windy conditions and consistently gave away their possession early in the tackle count, it took till the 12 minute for the Marauders to open their account when weak defence allowed Jason Blanchard to crash over taking three defenders with him to score his first ever Rugby League try 2-4.
Mansfield made sure that the two point lead that Thorne held was short lived when on 16 minutes a Storm player darted from acting half back for a converted try giving the Storm a four point lead 8 - 4, Mansfield where having a bright period using the wind to their advantage but in Thorne Moors next set a long pass by Mark Roach split the home defence and Dave Knott crossed in the corner for a unconverted try 8-8,
The next ten minutes was a scrappy affair with both teams turning the ball over cheaply, then on 35 minutes Nathan Hazlewood ran towards the Storms line, drawing in a couple of tacklers before sending Shaun Carver on a barnstorming run to touch down behind the post and Roach converted 8 - 14.
Two minutes later Andy Evans ran on to a great pass from Gaz Munro and from the following play the ball Nathan Hazlewood darted in for a try, Mark Roach again converted 8 - 20, with a minute to go to half time Mansfield scored their best try of the game when a well worked move split the visitors defence wide open to score in the corner 12 - 20

Half-time 12 - 20

The second half started with the Marauders going straight on the attack and on 43 minutes Shaun Carver bounced off several tacklers to go over between the posts Mark Roach added the extra points 12 - 26, six minutes later Carver again outmuscled the home defence with a blockbusting run to crash over for his hat trick and Roach again converted 12 - 32.
Credit must go to Mansfield after being hit by 12 points in the first 10 minutes of the second half they stepped up a gear themselves and replied with a unconverted try to bring the score to 16 - 32 with thirty minutes remaining, Ricky Tipper went on an arcing run dropping the ball off to Wayne Barnes who was making his debut for the Marauders, from the play the ball Shane Southgate sent a long ball out to Mark Roach who cut through the home defence before releasing Dave Knott to go in for his second try with Roach again adding the extras 16 - 38.
The game then went end to end for twenty minutes before the next score that went to Mark Roach who started and finished a five man move that included Dave Knott, Chris Pearson, Clifford Richardson and Paul Hopkinson, Roach converted 16 - 44, Mansfield again came up with a good individual try when their centre handed off a Thorne tackler to win the race for the line bringing the score to 20 - 44, with two minutes to go Craig Kitchen and Ian Evans exchanged passes before sending Dave Knott in to record his hat trick again Mark Roach added the extra two points to bring the final score 20 - 50

Having several players away including player coach Chris Allen Thorne Moor Marauders took the opportunity to give a few of their young new players a start.

With the game evenly balanced Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks drew first blood on 7 minutes when Ryan Rafferty was judged to have pulled the ball out in a three man tackle involving himself, Shane Lake & Gaz Munro, Danny Clay slotted over the penalty kick to open the scoring 2 - 0,

The Marauders were struggling to find any type of form with several new players in key positions the ball was constantly being put to ground very early in the tackle count, excellent driving by Mark Haigh set up Sheffield for Vince Cauldwell to crash over and Clay added the two extra points 8 - 0.

Sheffield were controlling the football far better than the visitors and this resulted in the Hawks getting a second try when Adam Dukes dummied his way through the Thorne defence drew Ricky Tipper before interchanging passes with Bernie Laudsberg to score under the posts again Clay added the conversion 14 - 0,

Thorne Moor Marauders then had what looked like a good try disallowed by the referee when a well worked move involving Ryan Rafferty, Shaun Carver & Dave Knott sent fullback Ricky Tipper in at the corner and as he raced in between the posts the referee brought him back for a forward pass.

Sheffield then extended their lead when the inexperienced defence again took a dummy and Vince Cauldwell again skipped in between the posts, Clay added the conversion 20 - 0.

Thorne Moor seemed to be down and out but with the introduction of Dean Armstrong and Mathew Bingley from the bench the Marauders started to keep their ball possession more and on 39 minutes Shaun Carver was sent through a gap by Shane Southgate his bullocking run and quick play the ball set up Dave Knott to crash over next to the corner after Andy Hopkinson had made a arcing run from half back to draw the defence before sending in Knott, Ryan Rafferty landed the touchline kick to bring the half-time score to 20 - 6.

The Marauders drew comfort from the try before half-time and came out of the blocks fast in the second half with the Marauders assistant coach Paul O?Neil MAKING HIS DEBUT at 41 (after taking training ground flak from the young lads), O?Neil started to make things happen giving his young team some kind of organisation and direction, but once again the referee gave the home team another penalty for stripping the ball in the tackle and again the deadly boot of Danny Clay added the two points 22 - 6, five minutes later the referee again awarded the Hawks a penalty for ball stripping which Clay slotted over 24 - 6.

Thorne Moor were coming more and more into the game Wayne Barnes, Adam Pickles, Matty Bingley were all making plenty of metres, Paul O`Neil then used all of his experience from a scrum 20 metres from his own try

Line he put in a beautiful kick for Ryan Rafferty to win the foot race to the ball, from the play the ball the ball went through seven pairs of hands before Paul O?Neil sent his nephew 16 year-old Craig Kitchen in for his first try, Rafferty added the two points 24 - 12, The Marauders were now starting to gain the upper hand but again Sheffield were awarded a penalty and again for ball stripping and again the trusty boot of Clay took the score to 26 - 12. Shaun Carver went on one of his barnstorming runs bouncing four defenders off and then out running the cover defence only to drop the ball over the try line, in the Marauders next set of six Ryan Rafferty put a great chip kick in and Shaun Carver re-gathered the ball to power over the top of the Sheffield fullback this time to score bringing the Marauders within reach of the home side 26 - 16.

Sheffield then knocked over a drop goal on 69 minutes by Bryn Evans 27 - 16 This drop goal would have knocked the steam out of most teams but it seemed to have the opposite effect with the Marauders, Colin Holgate made a break and was stopped just short of the line from the play the ball Paul O?Neil and Glen Waters sent Kev Harmer crashing over for a try converted by Rafferty 27 - 22, with 10 minutes remaining and the Marauders being dominant it looked like the game could be stolen from the Hawks but on 74 minutes the referee awarded a scrum to the Hawks after they had knocked on, this frustrated Thorne and while they were still contesting one of the many strange decisions against them Ben Gent skipped in and Clay added the extra points 33 - 22, The Marauders played the last 6 minutes camped in the home teams half but even with great work by Martin Rowlands and Ryan Rafferty the visitors failed to improve on their score.

Vital win for the Marauders

Thorne Moor Marauders took another step towards securing a top three spot in the North Midlands division, the Marauders opened the scoring as early as the third minute when the RLC Player of 2004 Shaun Carver crashed over and Ryan Rafferty added the two extra points 6 - 0. The Knights took only 4 minutes to reply when Steve Hughes stepped the home defence to go in next to the posts, Hughes added the conversion 6 - 6, with the game evenly balanced and both sets of forwards testing each other out there was no room for anyone to be passive or faint hearted, after a period of sustained pressure Thorne Moor forced a goal line drop out which the Knights put dead and Ryan Rafferty on 24 minutes took the two points on offer from the penalty 8 - 4.
With Lincoln being guided around the park by Ryan Miemzyck, Karl Beardshaw and Gareth Evans they started to get the
Upper hand but two great tackles from the Marauders centre Dave Knott saved the day and then from a scrum Shaun Southgate went from the base to out sprint the visitors defence to go in at the corner for a unconverted try 12 - 4, the visitors had the last say when with nowhere to go stand off Gareth Evans landed a 40 metre drop goal on 37 minutes.

Half-time 12 - 5

After absorbing Lincolns opening 10 minutes of pressure, Thorne Moor Marauders went up a gear with the introduction of Chris Allen & Nathan Hazlewood, the next score came after some good forward work by Staveley, Barnes and Blanchard who set up the platform for Chris Allen to side step the Knights defence to make a 30 metre break before passing to the supporting Carver who in turn gave the final pass to Hopkinson to score in the corner 16 - 5, Lincoln again refused to lie down and hit back with a try from Meehal Grwt who crashed over taking three defenders with him Gareth Evans added the extras 16 - 11, The Marauders then started to dominate with Carver breaking the line and off loading to the supporting Ryan Rafferty who raced 20 metres to score under the post he also added the extra points 22 - 11, with the forwards building the platform and Ryan Rafferty and Chris Allen linking wide the Marauders started to get some success out wide with Ricky Tipper going in on 65 & 68 minutes and Rafferty converted the second try to bring the score to 32 - 11, on 73 minutes Neil Speight rewarded coach Howard Roberts for bringing him into the side with a try next to the posts Rafferty again added the extra two points 38 -11

Worksop Sharks 4 v 26 Thorne Moor Marauders

The Marauders eased past Worksop Sharks to maintain the second spot in the North Midlands Rugby League Conference and set up next weeks home game in the top of the table clash with Derby City who beat the Marauders 36 - 24 early in the season.

Cliffton Richardson received the man of the match accolades and was the Marauders chief assassin with his first hat trick for the club, going into the game with a young squad Paul O`Neill told is players that they will be in for a battle against a very big Sharks outfit who contained players from leading West Yorkshire winter sides.

Thorne Moor got off to a dream start, Brett Staveley returned the kick off well into the Worksop half of the field and a second drive by Gaz Munro had the Sharks pegged on to their try line, Ciffton Richardson then took a short ball off Shane Southgate to crash in next to the goal posts, Ryan Rafferty added the extra two points 0 - 6.

The Marauders where totally in control playing almost all of the next 15 minutes inside the Worksop half with Nathan Hazlewood, Shane Southgate and Ryan Rafferty guiding the Thorne attack, a couple of powerful drives by Jason Blanchard & Wayne Barnes brought the ball out of the Thorne half of the field after Matty Bingley had fielded a high bomb under pressure, Paul Hopkinson broke from dummy half back to take the play 25 metres out from the Sharks try line and to the left of the field, the ball was moved quickly to the right with Ryan Rafferty and Mark Roach linking in the middle of the field to send Dave Knott powering through the home defence to score a 21st minute un-converted try in the corner 0 - 10.

Worksop gradually started to gain some possession and with Lee Wilks working hard from the front and both Dave & Richard Collinson going close before Chris Pearson and Ernie Lake cleared their try line and Cliffton Richardson unloaded a great ball for Ryan Rafferty to race 20 metres only to have the try disallowed for not grounding the ball.

Half time 0 -10

The second half started as a carbon copy of the first with Richardson breaking the home defence from 25 metres and carrying the cover defenders over the try line on his back, Ryan Raffferty added the extra two points 0 - 16.

Jamie Goodwin, Nathan Hazlewood, Brett Staveley, Shane & Ernie Lake were in the home teams faces with a well organised defence giving them no way through and when the Sharks had to resort to kicking Matty Bingley, Ricky Tipper and Mark Roach were more than capable to return the football, The Marauders struck again on 59 minutes when Kev Lake and Glen Waters linked up to send Cliffton Richardson on a 50 metre charge to the try line this time leaving the Sharks defence in his wake to bring the score to 0 - 20.

From the kick off Ian Evans took the ball back into the Sharks half and a quick play the ball saw Danny Duckitt scampering down the touch line with Craig Kitchen in support, Kitchens long pass to Ryan Rafferty saw him out pace the Sharks to score and convert his own try 0 - 26,

Worksop pulled a try back on 70 minutes when with nowhere to go they switched the ball back to the blind side and Chris Miller went in at the corner for a un-converted try 6 - 26

Thorne Moor Marauders 26 - 32 Derby City

Derby City underlined their intentions in the North Midlands Division with a great display at their nearest rivals Thorne Moor Marauders.
The Marauders started the scoring as early as the second minute when Ryan Rafferty slotted over a penalty for holding down in front of the Derby goals 0-2.
The game was being played at a very fast pace with the Marauders just shading the territorial advantage, on 10 minutes a lapse in the Thorne defence allowed Charlie Woodward to slip through and race 50 metres for a unconverted try 2-4.
Four minutes later Derby struck again when Mark Smith went crashing over for a try converted by Charlie Woodward 2-10, with both teams defending excellently it was no surprise when the next score came by the way of a penalty goal for a high tackle, Charlie Woodward made no mistake in extending the visitors lead 2-12.
The home team upped the pace and won a scrum against the feed, this resulted Gaz Munro crashing over for a unconverted try 6-12 , Every time the Marauders looked like crawling back into the game the visitors would strike and just on the half hour Graham Mallinson did just that scooting from acting half back he went crashing over to bring the score to 6-16.
The home side again rallied and from the kick off Derby knocked on and the Marauders made them pay with a well worked scrum move that saw Ryan Rafferty dummy himself over for a try he converted himself 12-16, but again Derby hit straight back with Martin Rothwell going over in the corner 12-20, with half time approaching Thorne dominated the field position and Howard Roberts playing his first game for three years shot in from acting half back this time Rafferty added the extra points 18-20

Thorne returned the kick off deep inside the Derby half, but the Derby defence stood up to the pounding and it was the visitors who came up with the big play when Chris Buckley broke the home defence on the Derby 20 metre line to outpace the chasing defence for a try converted by Charlie Woodward on 42 minutes 18-26, the killer blow and game winner came just 5 minutes later when the home team were putting pressure on the visitors, Martin Henderson read the Thorne attack and intercepted from Howard Roberts to race 55 metres for Derby to extend their lead to 18-30 and Charlie Woodward added the extras to take the score to 18-32 with 30 minutes to go.
Thorne were trying everything to bring themselves back into the game and a slick passing and supporting move sent Cliffton Richardson in at the corner on 53 minutes 22-32.
Thorne were pressing hard and at time playing panic football, the introduction of Gaz Munro back on to the pitch paid dividends for the home team, Munro punched through the Derby defence and off loaded the ball to Shaun Carver who outpaced the defence to score in the corner to bring Thorne to within 6 points of Derby 26-32.
Thorne then had two tries disallowed for passing the ball from of the ground & not grounding the ball correctly.
